I am the muscle Danielle is the skill.

Today we switched bedrooms with our boys.  Danielle had prepped me for it about a month ago and today she mentioned it and I decided to let it happen.   I pretty much had the job of moving the big stuff and she took care of making each room home.  Taking apart bunk beds and moving dressers is what I'm good at. She rocked it for hours after my work was done using a bunch of powertools putting up all the stuff that needs to hang on the boys walls.

Now we have a bigger room and it has a bathroom attached to it but no closet.  We have a funny old house that has 4 bedrooms that are pretty much all the same size.  Each room has 3 windows though and the layout of the windows was perfect for us to switch rooms as our King bed fits between windows and the boys bunk beds fit perfectly in our old room.

Nothing much else going on this weekend. Just hanging at the house. We didn't leave today except to walk out to our trash cans.

Thanksgiving in Texas

Yesterday I celebrated Thanksgiving Texas style.  First we bought a smoked turkey the day before.  If you've never had a smoked turkey you should try one.  Sounds dumb but the best way to describe it was "Smoky".  Really good flavor.  We had the blessing of hosting Danielle's mom Lesley with us this year.  Great meal and enjoyable fun putting it all together and even cleaning up.

The next part of the day was pure Texas.  Soren and I got picked up to head to Texas Stadium to watch the Cowboys take on the Seahawks.  Now I grew up in Seattle so I'm a Seahawks fan but since I've lived here I've been slowly converting to "Americas Team."   We went with my friend Steve and his dad.  The seats that I had been given were epic.  32 yard line 15 rows from the field.  The view was phenomenal.  It seemed that most of the people sitting around us had been friends for years as they all had their season tickets for a long time.  We hardly ever sat down at the game.   At half time the Jonas Brothers played.  Although the sound was terrible the experience was fun.

There are only a few games left at Texas Stadium before the season is over and they move to the new stadium next year.  I wanted to experience the old stadium before they moved.  It was really fun to be there with Soren too have an amazing dad and boy moment.

On one funny note at one point during the game he turned to me and pointed to the seats behind the end zone way at the top top of the stadium and said "Dad those are the seats we could afford right.  We're lucky someone gave us these huh?"  I loved it.  Nothing was better than standing next to him while he stood on a seat and watched the game.  I also realized he knows nothing about football so that's got to change.

Today is a rainy day in Texas.  We're not doing much. Danielle left to take Lesley to the airport and went to do some shopping.  We're just hanging out.

One of the best moments of the convention

I was in Nashville this weekend for a youth workers convention.  One of the greatest moments for me was when Mark Yaconelli finished his talk and went into dance mode.  As I heard it Mark did a great job of making me rethink my faith and the way I connect with God.  His dance made me think about how much my faith involves being joyful and stoked about God.  Just watch it.

Heard a great talk from Francis Chan today. He encouraged us to think about what the church would look like if we actually followed the Bible. He said it would look nothing like our churches now. Pretty convicting. I liked that he encouraged us to not give up on the church but to work on changing ourselves.

Heading to Nashville

I'm getting some last minute stuff done before I head to Nashville for the weekend.  Looking forward to hanging out with a bunch of my staff at the National Youth Workers convention.  These weekends are usually a lot of fun as I get to reconnect with friends from all over.  Usually though I go to events on the West Coast.  Different to be in the midwest and know very few people.  The benefit though is I can hang with my staff more.

NY Times: Finding Jesus on Facebook

Just saw a link to this article on Marko's blog.  I think the writer hit some things on the head that most churches are now wrestling with.   20-somethings are clearly living in a different world.  They are connected to each other via social media in ways that most of us can't even fathom.  This article does a great job of showing how some social media works in the church.  Remember that just because it works in New York doesn't mean it'll work in your particularl community but there are many concepts that probably translate.

“The question of how to connect with that generation is a primary question of the church and has been for a number of years,” said Troy Messenger, who teaches at Union Theological Seminary in Manhattan and focuses on the use of media in worship. “Biblical texts are in such another time and culture, it can be very difficult to translate to our life. A two-minute movie clip can do so much more than two minutes of sermon.”

I'll be the first to admit I often fall back into the 3 songs and a talk youth service but this article really encourages me to break free of that.   I am a big proponent of online social media but I haven't felt like its making much of a difference in students relationship with Jesus.

Read the article and tell me what you think.

What I’m reading.

Recently I've entered back into the reading realm.  I'm sure a lot of this has to do with me finally having the freedom to read whatever I want and have it not be tied to any institution or class.  I have a bad habit though of starting too many books at one time.  It takes me a lot longer to get through all the books this way but I find that it tends to be a better experience as much of the books seem to play off of each other.   Here's what I have currently stacked up on one arm of my chair.

Wholly jesus Wholly Jesus: This book was written by the lead pastor of my former church North Coast Calvary Chapel in Carlsbad, California.  Mark Foreman is one of those enigmatic type of people that has huge depth and amazing insights but you'd never know it sitting next to him on a surfboard.  He has a very unassuming way about him that is both refreshing in a pastor and also slightly disconcerting because you know he is constantly thinking about and analyzing everything you say.  It would probably be helpful to just state that Mark is who many should be in the Christian world.  Strong convictions, love for people, connected to culture yet recognizing his place.  One of my regrets of leaving San Diego was that I didn't take as many opportunities as I could have to know Mark more and to follow the sandals of this great thinker and pastor.

Unchristian UnChristian: This is a book I have been wrestling with for about a year.  I appreciate the authors thoughts about the 20-something generation which is why I originally picked it up.  The research is solid and the content helpful to think through.   I think that this book would be better read by me if I was doing it for a class or in dialogue with others.  That said I am fighting through it because I think it sets the stage for much other works about current generations and their loss of connections with the church.  It's foundational and sometimes foundational works are not  fun to read but should be read anyways.

Deathbylove Death By Love: I should state here first that I don't know Mark Driscoll or Gary Breashears.  My connection to Mark is only through our love of the Pacific Northwest and a shared belief that ministry there needs to be done in a particular way in order to reach a very unchristian community.   I have attended Mars Hill Seattle a few times but have never had the opportunity to hear Mark speak.  I have read a few of his other books and have found them to be decent reads but they also tend to be pretty strong rants about his particular form of Christian doctrine.   Mark tends to be a very brash writer/speaker about the things he believes in and the things he is against.  Again this works for the particular demographic he is aiming at in Seattle mainly 18-22 year old men.  I don't always enjoy his approach but I appreciate it and that's why I'm reading this book.  Plus it was free.

Sustainable Sustainable Youth Ministry: I have yet to open up this book but I am stoked to read it.  Mark Devries is a friend and someone who has been doing youth ministry at the same church for about 20 years.  In my interactions with Mark I've found him to be incredibly focused on just doing what God wants him to do in a very unassuming way that is focused on the church and on young people.  My only review of this book so far comes from my senior pastor who read it and told me he thought it was one of the best books written about youth ministry that he's ever read.  Pretty good endorsement so it's in the que.

Jesuswants Jesus Wants to Save Christians: Sometimes I like to describe myself as "the intern who followed Rob"  at the first church I worked at in California.   I have never met Rob but have many friends who speak highly of him.   I should state that his work in the Nooma video series is something that I respect very much.  He has a candid way of challenging us to rethink our basic assumptions about faith.   I have read all of Rob's books and while I don't always agree with his focus I think he has a voice that needs to be heard.  One thing I particularly appreciate is the way Rob doesn't overtly slam the church or historic Christianity and only tries to lead people into discussions about new ideas and thoughts.   I'm very much looking forward to reading this book.

Forpresident Jesus for President: I am a sucker for anybook that is done in a non traditional way.  This book has a design team that both makes it intersting and utalizes creative visual ways of driving points home.  I have heard Shane Claiborne speak a few times and I appreciate the way he encourages us to rethink how we are acting as Christians in this world.  Shane lives in community and it seems to shape everything he writes about.  In this book I have found his words to reach me in a way that makes me reread each chapter after I'm done.  He's that good and I can't wait to get into it more.

James, Josh, Brett and Me.

So I'm back from a short vacation.  About six months ago I planned a trip to Europe with my friend James and then we talked our friend Josh into going and were met there by our friend Brett who is working in Germany.  It was the perfect opportunity for me to get away for a few days and hang out with friends that have known me for many years.  We flew into London and spent a few days while James was speaking at a conference hanging out with a bunch of his friends.  After that we made it down to Canterbury where I saw another friend and then took a ferry to France and a train to Paris.  First night in Paris we stayed in a sketchy hotel room but at least it was near the cemetery where Jim Morrison was buried so we went and saw his grave.  Toured some museums and even hiked to the 2nd level of the Eiffel tower.  Got home last night and so far no jet lag.

Really fun to be with friends and a great way to celebrate finishing up grad school.  I have some good friends and I was blessed to be with them.

I did learn one thing on this trip though.  I snore.
