In an effort to bring a greater focus on training to my Monday morning youth staff meetings I’ve been pretty focused on putting great people in front of the team. We’ve had our senior pastor share his journey, a theologian talk about the PCUSA and twice now have had our Youth Ministry staff Therapist/social media guru Rhett Smith share with the team. Let me first say if you haven’t followed Rhett’s blog you should. He has some great stuff on there that would be helpful for your ministry.
Last month Rhett took the team through an hour long teaching on Self-Care. The idea behind it was learning to take care of yourself while working in the ministry. Many of us were nodding our heads, shaking our heads, feeling great and bummed. He brought up some really good things to think about especially as it relates to boundaries.
Today Rhett took us through a talk of family system ideas and specifically about our identity being built by the families we grew up in and our parents grew up in. He showed us how much of who we are in ministry comes from that background, baggage and identity that comes from our families. I thought it was very helpful and I would recommend his study to anyone who wants him to come do it.
Rhett and I joked tonight that there is a place out there for a book on Youth Ministry and understanding dynamics of family and self as you lead. Sort of a self-care focused book on how we lead out of our brokenness.
