I just got out of a meeting where we were talking about a seminar series we were doing for our 20-something generation at church. Will Fletcher who was self professed the oldest person in the room by at least 20 years said this, “The 20-something generation doesn’t care about the voice of experience they want to hear the voice of relevance.” What struck me by the quote is that I immediately looked down at the bio which had been done about me detailing who I was and what I’ve done. I hope that I can be relevant always and not rest too much on my education credentials and my resume.

I think there’s a key point that needs to be made here – relevance needs to be understood in context. It’s not an amorpheous term. It’s not “this is relevant to me, maybe not to you.” Yeah, that happens, but I don’t think that’s important when you’re talking about the gospel. True relevance is connected with experience – relevant experience. I think that’s what’s important. We all recognize that some experience is more worthwhile than others. There’s nothing more relevant to you, sitting there in the middle of a re-model that’s getting messy, when you’re in over your head, than the guy who comes up behind you and says – “Yeah, I’ve been here before. Let me show you how to fix this…” RELEVANT experience…
