Most of you who read this blog (I know a small number) know that I am working on a Doctorate. Part of my program involves reading a number of books that approach leadership and culture from different directions. Recently we have been reading a book called Broken Beauty. (see sidebar) The best way to describe this book is to say that it is a coffee table style book full of art that encourages a thought process aimed at the connection between art and Christianity. It’s full of art by non Christian artists who are attempting to show a deeply spiritual conviction through their works. I’ll be honest and say I don’t understand a lot of it and am not even a great art critic. But, what I am learning throughout this book is that there are parts of the puzzle that we in the Church have not figured out yet. The reality is that this book and the art it contains speak to people who would never come through the doors of our churches. I’m not sure what we need to do with that information except to simply admit there is more to all of this than our programs, vision and goals are currently solving. I want to seek to understand it more and look for God more in beauty and asthetics. It’s hard to admit that when I’ve been typing away on my computer for the last 3.5 hours. I think I’ll turn it off and go for a walk. Pretty day out…….
