Marshall McLuhan on Media

The last several weeks I have been doing a lot of reading about media and culture.  I have read a ton of Marshall McLuhan and my brain hurts.  What I have learned through this study is that we don’t have it figured out at all.  I am so quick to jump on the latest fad and newest media.  I have a video ipod, know how to make a podcast, use constant contact and even have this blog.  But, how much do I really think about what the “Message” is of the media which I am choosing to use.

Here’s some thoughts.

Magazines with a different focus:
These three magazines were picked because they fit along a scale of cultural interaction.  On one side of the scale is Relevant magazine which attempts to interact with culture but at the same time is very committed to creating its own culture via its publishing company. It has a very overtly Christian tone and a desire to “impact” culture.   Risen magazine is in the middle of the scale where it attempts to allow culture to be “real” but tries to interact with it on that level. Because of that they will interview people who have no Christian beliefs but still ask them what they think about God.  Paste Magazine is on the far side of this spectrum.  It is not a magazine that has any overt Christian tone.  It’s interacting with culture is done in a very different way that allows culture to speak for itself without any questions about belief.  It also doesn’t present only the best marketed and faddish artists and is committed to finding real and good musicians.

Relevant Magazine Enhances: Relevant enhances the interaction between popular media and the 20-something Christian generation.  It gives opportunity to analyze culture through a distinctly Christian lens. Retrieves: For a generation that is not very discerning about media it retrieves the ability to recognize things which have Christian messages. Reverses into: there is a “big” tendency for an “Us vs. them” worldview.  Also trying to create our own culture.  Obsolesces: On some level it makes it obsolete for the person reading to think on their own.  This can be a “hot” media that discourages interaction and thinking.  We must be careful when a magazine tells too much what it thinks and sets up its own scales.

Risen Magazine Enhances: The ability for Christians to interact with culture on its own footing without us creating a “straw man” for us to knock over.  Retrieves: Real questions for real people.  We read interviews where people who are not Christians are asked (and answer) hard questions about God.  This brings back great interactions. Reverses into: A tendency to allow for other beliefs to be ok.  By not asking hard or enough questions we could be setting the stage for acceptance of all beliefs. Obsolesces: Our own community of artists, musicians, actors and athletes who don’t have the marketing campaigns behind them don’t get opportunities to be in a great magazine.

Paste Magazine
Enhances: the ability for culture to be what it is and for Christians to interact with it on that level.  The discerning Christian must think and interact with culture. Retrieves: The 20-something generation must think about culture and music and not simply be “fed” what ever is the most hyped and faddish.  Reverses into: There can be the tendency to lose sight of what is Holy and pure.  It allows for a much greater belief system because nothing is talked about as being “true.” Obsolesces: Music and culture that is put out by the Christian community.

California Adventure

Danielle and I are really starting to figure out this theme park thing. Now granted I’d rather be on a river rafting somewhere than sitting at Disneyland but we are really getting it. Today we braved California Adventure with two strollers a bunch of snacks and about 5 hours of patience. The kids were great and we had a lot of fun. But, now I’m freaking tired. There is only so much I can do…..did I mention my paper was due yesterday?

Trying to write

Today I have a big research paper due for my D.Min program. I’m way behind schedule in getting it done. I probably won’t post for a while until I finish it. My goal is to finish it before the weekend.

Here’s a short video of Soren skating at the Carlsbad Skate Park for the first time. Too bad I can’t find the other video of him getting knocked over by a kid on a scooter.

Check this out….just over 10 months old and two days ago made it happen

Great Friends and the Wired World

I’m not sure why birthday #36 was different than all the others but I was amazed today at home many of my friends and family called me. It seems that everyone now has some sort of calendar program that alerts them of birthdays. It was a special day to hear from so many friends. Better than any present and I like presents.

Sitting next to Soren

Every once in a while I reflect on what it means to be a dad. Recently I have begun to realize that my oldest son (Soren) is really turning into a pretty amazing guy. He’s helpful (can find tools for me), he’s creative (today he put a book of animal pictures together)he’s loving (lot’s of hugs for his brother and sister)he’s caring (always aware of others feelings)he’s funny (makes me laugh all the time)He’s smart(just told me that it was 9:05 and he’s still awake) I love being a dad. I love my kids. I need energy to keep up with them. This summer they are going to Nicaragua, Mexico (twice) Houseboating, Forest Home (twice), rafting and a couple of Padres games. Lucky I wish I was a kid. Oh wait I guess i’m on all those trips too.

What I’m learning

Recently I’ve been struggling with purpose. I’m not quite sure where those struggles started but they are here and real. Part of it I’m sure is that I’m entering into a particularly busy season of life with school, work, family and a busy season of ministry. Part of it is all the reading I’m doing and the things it stirs up in in me. A lot of it comes from doing ministry for 10 years and feeling like its time for a vacation. And I don’t mean a short vacation. I’d love to take a 2 month sabatical to think, pray, reflect and regroup. But, since there is no way that’s going to happen I’m basically just going to keep on keeping on and figure it out as I go. The good thing is that I’m not in a dry place right now. I’m feeling pretty good about my relationship with God. Its just that I’m spread thin and its hard to find purpose in the midst of that.

That said I just finished my last training session at the gym today. I lost 20lbs of fat and I’m feeling pretty good about that.

Happy Easter

Easter has a new meaning after you spend a week serving homeless people in San Francisco. Got back tonight after spending a week seeing what its like to be hurting and homeless. So many people and so much darkness in that city. Where was Jesus, where was the light, was it with us, inspite of us or even separate from us. We spent time in the Tenderloin and the Castro both places are hurting severly for truth and love. Jesus you need to be real in those places. Use us, use YWAM use anything you can.
